I blogged about this in my
Pinay WAHM blog not too long ago. It just never ceases to amaze me how far people will go to scam other people.
I am talking about
PHISHING EMAILS. A lot of us working online or have some business dealings online are probably aware of this. Unfortunately, even the most seasoned online business people sometimes fall prey to these scammers.
Paypal is actively pursuing these good for nothing scammers by setting up an an email account where we can forward any suspicious looking emails. The email to send it to is:
spoof@paypal.com. Some guidelines have been set up by
Paypal to how to spot if the email is legitimate or not. Here are some:
-
spelling is usually poor on the phishing emails -
you are usually addressed as: Paypal customer or something impersonal like: Dear Paypal member [Legit Paypal email normally address their customers by name] -
they provide a link in the email [Paypal NEVER provide links in their emails for verification]
** We have to remember though that these scammers are getting better by the minute so these are just guidelines. As a rule of thumb, NEVER CLICK a LINK provided in the email. If you want to check your account with Paypal, go directly to their homepage and access your account from there. If you have any questions, contact their support from their website. They will be more than happy to assist you. Here are 2 of the emails I usually get. They look really legit especially the PayPal logo on top. If you look at the email add on the second one, it says: from: service@paypal.com but the address in the parenthesis is totally different. Also, for the recipient, it say: undisclosed-recipients. Chances are, the emails are sent to multiple recipients.
